Caves

Three caves are of incomparable beauty in Astypalea.

The Negro’s Grotto (cave of Negros) in the area of Vatses
The “cave of Negros” with unique stalactites and stalagmites, the tradition wants connected with legends of pirates and hidden treasures. You get out of the town by boat. There are guided tours to the cave and the surrounding area.

The Cave of the Dragon, in Vathi
To the north of the island, north of Mary Thomas, is the cave of the Dragon in Vathi with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. You get the Vathi by boat or by foot (about 2 hours).

Cave of Panagia Poulariani in Analipsi
The tallest mountain in the north of the island, is Kastelanno Mary Thomas. The Virgin Mary with Christ in arms said to form the rock of the church.

Panagia of the Castle and Agios Georgios

When you climb to the Castle of Guerini you will find two churches. 

The Castle of Agios Ioannis

The Castle of Agios Ioannis in the southwest coast of Astypalaia dates back to the Byzantine times.

Windmills in Chora

In the central square of Chora you will find the traditional eight mills next to the monument to the fallen also located there.
